Do you remember our port visits to Puerto Rico? Riding those Cattle Cars to the enlisted, chiefs, and officers’ clubs? The USO's MWR Shack on the pier selling 3.2% beer and other sundries? Downtown liberty in San Juan? Gun fire support exercises on Vieques and GTMO refresher training with stopovers in Roosevelt Roads?
Yorktown Crew and Family and Friends have an opportunity to provide help and comfort for Puerto Rico's Children.
Ivonne is a talented lady who lives in my community and she is from Puerto Rico. She travels back and forth to Puerto Rico every few weeks to deliver handmade pajama's and pillows to needy childern. Yes! She makes them all by hand from economically purchased materials!
Each box contains a his or her's set of handmade pajamas, a handmade pillow with a short encouraging scripture, a plastic cup, toothpaste, and a small bar of soap.
The ship's sponsor Mary Matthews was a patriot and very generous lady. She said during the ship's Commissioning "the name Yorktown has always embodied the American spirit of freedom and the gift of liberty." We have an opportunity once again to be "second to none."
100% of all donated funds (less PayPal charges) are used to make pajamas, pillows, and buy toiletries for children.
"There is no such thing as second best because no one does it better than us" Christopher I. Fields GSE1(SW) Yorktown Plankowner and Sailor of the Year 1984 (page 1, first cruise book).
Our contributions as "One Yorktown" will enable us to collectively provide comfort and happiness to children during this time of rebuilding. All donations are significant.
